Collected papers from researchers and educationalists at the major conference in Sweden in 1993 documenting two decades of successful Swedish experiences of bilingual education for deaf children, using sign language as a medium of instruction and teaching written Swedish as a second language. It looks at sign language and bilingualism for the deaf alongside research into bilingualism and general linguistics in spoken languages. It makes clear that our increased knowledge in these areas is a necessary prerequisite for the proper development of educational opportunities for deaf people and it makes a major contribution to the current literature.
