Humourous and honest autobiographical account of becoming deaf aged 11 following illness in a country that viewed deafness as inhuman. Set in 1952 it follows the family’s attempts to find a cure from both medics and Sadhu’s alike. Failed completely by the local school, Vasishta’s childhood is spent herding the family cattle and dreaming of becoming a photographer. Through his contact with the Delhi deaf community Vasishta realises this dream and goes on to attain a degree from Gallaudet.
