American Dennis Buck unveils all of the ins and outs of exploiting his 'disabilities' to earn easy money. 'Deaf Peddler' also provides an historical perspective on deaf peddling as away for under-educated deaf people to make a living when jobs were hard to find, wages low and, social security did not exist. The National Association of the Deaf in the USA campaigned to discourage this, claiming it simply enforced deaf stereotypes and Buck himself abandoned it for this reason. However it survives today and 'Deaf Peddler' presents in an engaging fashion a little-known cultural phenomenon. Paperback 136 pages Sept 2000 |
