This meticulous study examines the motivation of Deaf people to demand social change over the last two hundred years. Central to this study is the struggle between a dominant hearing society and Deaf people over recognition of Sign as a language, particularly within education. Influences of other social movements an protest groups of the 60's and 70's are explored as is the famous 1988 'Deaf President Now!' campaign at Gallaudet University. The book concludes with an overview of the goals of multicultural society and presents suggestions for community building through humanitarianism.
