The Kinzie school in Chicago USA was for decades the pride of the neighbourhood until racial conflict and desegregation threatened its existence. Then the school's head welcomed, with open arms, 15 classes of deaf children. This is the story of the school from 1982, when hearing and non-hearing children were kept in separate parts of the school, to the present, where all students intermingle and achieve together. Farseeing educators and determined parents transformed the school into a model of excellence.
