The author became severely deaf through meningitis when she was 6. She resolutely overcame this problem by becoming a skilled lip-reader and excelled at school. Aged 25 a series of strokes took away any residual hearing and she became profoundly deaf. Dauntlessly she reconstructed her life and learned Sign and Total Communication. It was then she realised just how much she had missed. This is a remarkable account of achievement and accomplishment.
