This is an autobiographical account of a Deaf woman who left her native Finland to be with her husband on the Caribbean island of St. Lucia. Leaving behind her home, job and the comfort and society of her Deaf friends and community, she finds a new life and a new Deaf community by teaching deaf children on the island. She describes the island and her day by day progress with the children in loving detail, but the focal point comes through Alphonso, a deaf orphan with no language, whom she rescues from the streets.
