A two-volume set, from Gallaudet University, includes a separate "toolkit" section comprised of appendices that support each chapter in the book. It introduces Stages of Literacy Development, as well as other easy-to-photocopy checklists and assessment tools developed specifically for deaf children in the areas of reading, writing, conversational language support, student self-assessment and parental input. It draws on current theories about learning, outlines development of language and literacy and stresses the importance of always focussing on needs and skills of individual children.
