"Deaf City", the nickname the students give their residential school for the deaf, is a hotbed of deaf politics. Cat, a signer, is fed up with the infighting amongst the pupils over using Sign or speech. Then as the end of the school year approaches, she begins to worry about life outside in the 'scary' hearing world. Cat decides to learn to speak despite her best friend's opposition. Having grown up with a deaf brother and deaf sister who chose opposite communication methods, the author has a close knowledge of the issues raised in this very readable and well crafted story.
