This focused edition of Deaf Worlds, the International Journal of Deaf Studies, concentrates on the theme of "Deaf Nation". Papers presented at the 1997 international symposium at the University of Central Lancashire by Doug Alker, Paddy Ladd, Johan Wesemann & Lilian Lawson are here published for the first time in print. There is also an introduction by Graham Turner and concluding observations by Steve Emery entitled "Deaf Nation, Five Years On". The material is extremely powerful and reflects a highly significant transition to a mode of discourse in relation to Deaf people, one with a more overtly political tone. This volume is a must for all involved in Deaf studies.
