All Of Us Together - Inclusion At Kinzie School Jeri BanksJohn H. Kinzie Elementary School, in southwest Chicago, for decades was the pride of its neighbourhood until changing demographics, racial conflict, and desegregation mandates threatened its existence. Then, its new principal, James Burke, welcomed 15 classes of deaf and hard of hearing children. All of Us Together is the story of the Kinzie School from 1982, when hearing and non-hearing populations were kept in separate parts of the school, to the present in which all students intermingle freely and achieve together. Farseeing educators and equally determined parents transformed Kinzie, including establishing an arts program that became the template for programs throughout Chicago. |
