Visual Phonics By Hand Programme

VisPhons is a simple system of handcues for teaching and using phonics with deaf children. It offers a quick way of showing the phonemes in English speech and spelling. Visual Phonics overlays any published phonics schemes to give greater access for deaf children.

It is used in many contexts: by Mainstream teachers or specialist Teachers of the Deaf for deaf children integrated into mainstream classes; by TODs or classroom assistants working one-to-one; by teachers with groups of deaf children in Special Schools or Resource Bases; by Speech and Language therapists in schools and clinics; and it has been used by mainstream teachers of children in other languages. It was developed by Babs Day, an experienced Teacher of the Deaf, who created it as a simple literacy teaching tool for use in mainstream or special school classrooms.
